CERES Farm is home to over 260 gregarious Isa brown laying hens, all called Hazel, and are cared for by our Animal co-ordinator. Isa browns are a hybrid breed originally bred from White Leghorn and Rhode Island Reds. They are hard working ladies, producing approximately 200 eggs each day depending on the season. The eggs are collected daily by various teams of students, staff and volunteers, and sold in the CERES Market Shop. The eggs are renowned for their flavour and nutrition and always sell out on market days. The hens are fed only certified organic food including leftover market fruit and vegetables. They free range from sunrise to sunset 365 days of the year and are safely tucked up at night in their fox proof enclosure. CERES also runs regular workshops on caring for chooks, please visit the Workshop page for more information.  If you would like more information about our chooks or would like to volunteer to help care for our chooks please email farmanimals@ceres.org.au

Bees are also a major part of our animal program. There are over 5 bee hives onsite on the paddocks at CERES. The hives are managed by the CERES Bee Group who meet on the 3rd Sunday of every month to manage the hives and to harvest the honey. The honey is available for sale at the CERES Shop.

Here is a video about preparing be hives this winter at CERES. If you are interested in getting involved you can visit the Bee Group or contact Lyndon at mail@urbanhoneyco.com.
