CERES 25th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

On World Environment Day June 5th, 2007 CERES celebrated its’ 25th Birthday and focused on CERES Past, Present and Future.

The 25th Birthday celebration were held in the Centre and many people enjoyed the opportunity to have a look at the fantastic new building, and celebrate the contribution CERES has made to our community and the environment.

CERES Past achievements and significant events were remembered through a historic photo display that lined the outside wall of the new Centre.

Party guests were taken for a site tour with stories from staff and news about current activities and projects at CERES, with a tea soiree in the nursery and Lindi Huntsmans' photographic exhibition of CERES Faces that captures the spirit and beauty of people at CERES.

The Future was contemplated through a schools storytelling competition where students were invited to imagine "When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because . . "

We received over 1500 entries from 52 schools in Victoria, the majority of entries were from Primary schools, and the standard was exceptional.

Luke Veale from Lake Bolac College wrote a poem about sustainability and Claudia Altavilla from St Martin of Tours Primary School created a ‘Save our World’ booklet.

Andrew Cooper – author of the Diary of Little Things selected the winner for the secondary section and Andy Griffiths, award winning children’s author chose the winner in the primary section.

Andy Griffiths presented the winning students with their prizes, a CERES Sustainability Kit, which included; CERES Membership, a gift voucher from the CERES Permaculture and Bushfood Nursery; energy efficient light globes, a voucher from Readings bookstore and signed books from Andy Griffiths.

Nick Skutenko from Bluescope Water presented the students with a voucher for the 2000 Litre water tanks they have won for their schools.

Year 7 class at Warragul Regional College received the CERES Award for a creative and outstanding class effort; the whole class will take part in a sustainability education program courtesy of CERES Education.

CERES would like to thank the generous support of Bluescope Water and Readings Bookstore for sponsoring our storytelling competition.

CERES future was further contemplated through Biomagination, a project visualising CERES as a hub of urban agriculture and environmental innovation including Networked Neighbourhoods in the surrounding area and along the Merri Creek corridor in 2032.

The project has been lead by Stephen Mushin, who has been working together with a group of RMIT industrial design students and VEIL (Victorian Eco Innovation Lab).

The new CERES Strategic Plan, was unveiled by CERES chairperson Robert Larocca announcing that, "While our purpose has not changed, how we go about achieving it has.  Over the next five years we are going to;
Address the causes of climate change,
Promote social wellbeing and connectedness,
Build local and global equity, and
Embrace and facilitate rapid change.”

The celebration was a great event, heralding in a new era at CERES which is now much more than your local community environment park; it is a model for sustainable communities globally, it continues to inspire innovation, wellbeing and multiculturalism.

The party is not completely over!  There are more 25th Birthday events planned for the rest of the year, look out for a bike ride, an extra special membership drive with a fantastic prize and Kingfisher festival surprises!

CERES 25th Birthday Art Auction
CERES would like to thank all the artists who put their art where their heart is by donating works to the first Art Auction at CERES. The Auction raised over $7000 for our Environment Fund to support the work CERES does for the Melbourne community in educating school children, providing training and jobs for disadvantaged groups, researching water and environmental issues.

Thanks also to everyone who put a bid down in what was a terrific fun night for all. Guests enjoyed the beautiful music of Emma Tonkin and Liam Freeman and the fantastic food provided by our very own Seven Stars and the CERES Cafe.
