Curriculum
Planning for Sustainability (VELS)
The VELS are sometimes described
by AuSSI Vic facilitators as ‘sustainability in
a paper bag’. At every level, in every domain
you can embed sustainability issues in the curriculum
using the learning focus statements and standards contained
in the VELS. All you need is a little sustainability
inspiration, some lateral thinking to interpret the
statements and the CERES developed ‘VELS and Sustainability
matrix’ to start embedding sustainability in your
school curriculum today!

How
does climate change make students feel?
2007 will go down in history
as the year when the mass media started taking climate
change seriously. We are flooded with images and articles
about the effects that climate change is predicted to
or already is causing. But how are our children coping
with this information? Are they terrified? Are they
apathetic? Do they understand? Using student surveys,
this incursion will delve into some of these questions
and adults will be facilitated through discussions around
the feedback that has been provided by children.

Water
play and conservation
Water play is a fundamental experience
which engages children from young infants to preschoolers
and is often at the core of programs for children with
additional needs. Water restrictions have placed new
demands on early childhood programs. How do we meet
legislated requirements while maintaining a relevant
and diverse program for all children? How do we communicate
the importance of water play experiences to parents
in the context of current restrictions? This incursion
investigates current water management issues, strategies
to responsibly incorporate water play experiences into
children’s programs, planning play experiences
which respect water as a finite resource and also ideas
on how to reuse water. |
