3 – 6 Environmental
Problems
The environmental problems incursion
provides an introduction to the major environmental
issues which occur in today’s society because
of the way we live. Students will be introduced to many
topics including stormwater pollution, litter, waste
disposal (landfill), water wastage and at higher levels,
air pollution and climate change. Through interactive
hands on activities based around these environmental
issues, students will have the opportunity to see some
of the underlying causes and negative effects of the
way some things are done in our society. The incursion
aims to make students aware of the environmental issues
affecting their local area and gives them practical
ideas of lessening their own personal impact on the
environment. |

– 6, 7 – 10 Student
Action Teams
Student Action Teams can be
a very powerful force for sustainability in your school.
This incursion will provide a strong foundation for
your students to build upon. The session is very practical
and focussed and works best with a small group of
students, no more than 12, who will then become the
action team. You can choose to have your students
focus on waste, water, energy or biodiversity, or
better still have a different focussed student action
team for different year levels. During the incursion
students will learn about the types of actions that
a student action team can undertake within a school
and will learn about the sorts of outcomes that can
be achieved as a result. Students will participate
in creating an action plan specific to their school
and will be facilitated in planning dates and rosters
in order to undertake the action plan. If your school
has, or wants to have a student leadership team that
focus on environmental and sustainability issues,
this session can help you!

– 6, 7 – 10 Sustainability
– The Greatest Challenge
The sustainability incursion
provides an introduction to the concept of sustainability
and how this concept fits in with modern day society.
Students will learn, through visual activities that
human development and dominance on earth has only occurred
for a very short time in the history of the earth, and
that in this short amount of time humans have caused
many environmental disasters. The presentation explores
the idea that most developed areas of the world are
living in such an unsustainable manner, that if everyone
in the world were to live this way, we would need more
than one earth in order to sustain this lifestyle. Students
will investigate the idea of resource depletion and
distribution and will discuss some of the consequences
and causes for this. Through hands on activities students
will explore some issues and consequences involved with
the problem of climate change which is directly related
to the unsustainable way in which humans have been living.
Students will then look into what actions they can take
in order to find solutions to some of these problems,
and be able to look forward to a more sustainable future. |

– 6, 7 – 10 Australia
2030
The Australia 2030 Incursion
looks into different possible futures for Australia
based on what actions we take in our lives and in
society today. Different scenarios are looked into
and what kind of a future these scenarios would produce
is discussed. Students will think about what they
would like their futures to look like and will explore
what they should do today in order for that future
to be attainable. Students will discover some of the
unsustainable behaviours and processes that have developed
within our society, and will discuss what sort of
future is possible if these unsustainable practices
continue to happen.

– 6, 7 – 10
Environmental
Footprints
Every human activity consumes
resources from the planet and produces waste that
the planet must then deal with. The area of land that
these activities use is known as an ecological footprint.
Students will also explore their water and carbon footprints and look at the food miles of common products. This incursion will help students figure out how much
bio-productive area and resourcesis required to support their lifestyle. How many worlds would be needed if everyone
on earth lived like you? Students will also explore
how the earth’s resources are used in different
countries and will discover actions they can take
in order to reduce their impact on the planet and
therefore to reduce their Environmentall Footprints.

5– 6, 7 – 10 Social Justice and Global Equity
During this inucrsion students explore concepts of social sustianability.
Globalisation and fair trade have been buzz words for a number of years, but what
do they actually mean? By participating in simulation
games and role plays, students will be introduced to
the concepts of globalisation and fair trade. They will
be challenged to think about some of the driving forces
behind these concepts and will discover what sorts of
effects are being produced as a result. Students will
discover how globalisation and fair trade have and are
affecting lesser developed countries, and will discuss
how consumption and waste are related to these concepts.
Fair access to resources global inequity and how we need
to be sustainable in order to support planetary health.
Through activities and role plays students will simulate
how other cultures access everyday resources and will
then be able to compare the Australian health system
and resources to other developed and developing countries.
After partaking in this incursion students will understand
that we take many things in our everyday lives for granted,
which will allow them to contemplate what life would
be like if they were born in a different area of the
world that didn't have access to as many resources.
Social implications
of climate change and how these will vary between developing
and developed countries. What will happen to farmers
if they can’t irrigate their crops? Where will
people move to and how will they be affected if rising
sea levels engulf their homes? Climate change will bring
about more frequent extreme weather events such as severe
storms. What sorts of effects will these events have
on people living in different parts of the world? The
social implications of climate change are already occurring.
Making your students aware of some of these issues through
participation in this incursion will challenge them
to come up with solutions to this potentially devastating
problem.

5 – 6, 7 – 10 Population
Growth
Finding a balance between economic
prosperity, population growth and resource conservation
is important for maintaining sustainable communities.
By participating in this incursion, students will explore
world population growth, past and projected, the factors
affecting it and the problems associated with unsustainable
population growth. Students will partake in role plays
and activities that will allow them to explore some
of the problems caused by unsustainable population growth
and will discuss some possible solutions to these problems.
Some suggested solutions to unsustainable population
growth will be introduced and students will be challenged
to think of how these solutions may effect their own
lives as well as those of people living in different
parts of the world.
