CERES is pioneering the design and implementation of the Urban Food Hub. In the face of peak oil, climate change and urban sprawl CERES has developed the Food Hub as a way to efficiently grow our food right here in the city.  Food Hubs are modular; made out of various elemental ‘building blocks’ such as shipping containers and polytunnels that are solar powered and collect their own water. Food Hubs are designed to be temporary and moveable structures that can be set up for short periods of time on vacant land. They use intensive farming principles such as aquaponics (fish & vegetables) and mushroom production to efficiently grow large amounts of food in a small area. All processing can be done on site, and they can operate as a community hubs; being a distribution point for local food, having training and education facilities and even a community kitchen or café.

The very first Food Hub is currently located at our warehouse with CERES Fair Food in Northcote. We are growing oyster & shiitake mushrooms, herbs, leafy greens, silver perch and brown trout.
