About
For the first time since 2008, CERES Global is travelling to Java in Indonesia, offering travellers the opportunity to experience daily village life and work alongside community organisations implementing fresh approaches to sustainability.
Subik, an Indonesian born Australian who works at CERES as an environmental educator facilites the trips. Subik brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experenience in Indonesian, language, culture and environment.

2012 Program (1st July – 17th July)
The trip will begin in Jogjakarta were we will spend a day undertaking language training and a day visiting significant cultural sites in the area. From there we will also spend 2 days visiting and engaging with the local community at Sukanan Village.

Sukunan Village
Sukunan VillageSukunan Village is located on the outskirts of Jogjarkata. The small farming community of 250 families is setting an example for much of the world, undertaking an incredibly innovative program in recycling and re-greening. The project began in 2000 at a time when nobody wanted to pay for their waste removal. Inevitably rubbish continued to build up in the landscape causing serious environmental impacts, health problems and chocking farming irrigation systems.

In response to this serious environmental issue, the community was able to secure a $2000 grant to implement a recycling and composting program. Through awareness raising, education and a high level of community engagement the program has grown into a successful community business that recycles all the village waste at the same time creating a local source of revenue through the sale of recycled products made by village members. The village has since become a leader in sustainable waste management for the surrounding area, setting an example that can be replicated both locally and globally.

Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM)
On leaving Jogjarkata we will continue travelling east to the town of Cipanas, where for just over a week we will work with the local community Organisation Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM)

"Yum’s community based projects aim to provide a better standard of living for those families living in poverty working in a number of sectors including water and sanitation, agriculture and microcredit for women.

YUM aims to create a foundation for long-term stability and growth by promoting cooperation between members of each community and show communities what can be achieved when they work together."

How you can get involved:

  • • Organise activities and workshops with the local community (mostly children) or with the YUM staff;
  • • Helping out in the vocational training centre (English, environmental education and computer classes);
  • • Working in the organic farm;
  • • Undertaking maintenance around the grounds and;
  • • Helping out in the library
  • • Participants are also encouraged to develop their own projects (potentially in collaboration with other travellers).
  • • Whilst at YUM, there will also be the option to climb the nearby Mount Gunung Gede, pictured below and demonstrating the stunning landscapes travellers will be working in.
