chook group

The Chook Group, founded in 1986, was one of the original site groups at CERES.

The group is made up of local people who tend a flock of free-range chooks humanely and in a permaculture environment. They maintain a flock of around 50 chooks, divided between two runs, each under the watchful eye of a dominant rooster.

How does it run?
To keep the flock healthy and happy requires dedication and commitment. The group is organised around a 14-day roster. Each member takes responsibility for a particular day, feeding the chooks and letting them out to range in the morning and returning in the evening to ensure they are safely in the chook shed, away from the danger of foxes and other predators. Members are rewarded with the eggs laid that day (we do not sell eggs). A working bee is held on the first Sunday of each month. Members make an annual financial contribution to pay for feed and other essentials, and are also contributing to be financial members of CERES.
