Urban Orchard Project

CERES, in conjunction with the Garden of Eden, is currently undertaking a feasibility study into the creation of an Urban Orchard within the Brunswick and Northcote region.

The Urban Orchard aims to promote the growing and harvesting of fruit trees from homes within the area, with the potential of distributing and sharing the produce between the participating or donating/selling it to the CERES Organic Market for sale on Saturday (amongst other possibilities.)

Why?
· To provide an opportunity for people to utilise otherwise-wasted fruit and nuts
· To create friendships within the neighbourhood and build stronger local communities
· To reduce green waste and pressure on landfill
· To provides healthy in-season food for the community
· To reduce the need to transport fruit from outside the city / state / country! – less transport means less fuel burned, hence reduced pollution and greenhouse gas emissions

The Urban Orchard hopes to provide an opportunity for people to learn more about their fruit trees, running courses on gardening and maintenance, or potentially providing some hands-on assistance.

Read the recent article about the Urban Orchard Project from the Leader newspaper.

We would like to know if you…
· Have you got any fruit trees; and
· Are interested in being involved.
· How would you like the Urban Orchard to run?
· What would get you involved?
· What would turn you away?

CERES Organic Market

Every Saturday and Wednesday morning, rain, hail or shine, for the past four years CERES has been holding a vibrant community market. Located in front of the animal stables, the focus of the market is very affordable organic fruit, veg, dry goods, grocery items and sourdough organic breads. You can also find stalls selling hand-made clothing, natural soaps and skincare, flowers, jewellery, pottery, woodcraft, massage, tarot and second-hand/recycled items.

This ain’t no Saturday (Wednesday) morning at Safeway!

We’ll make you a fresh organic coffee to go with an incredible organic pastry or a CERES Café muffin, while you listen to some fine local music and your kids hang out with the lambs and chooks.

The fruit and vegetables we sell are either grown in our own market gardens here in Brunswick, or are bought direct from local Victorian growers, like Ron, who grows incredible swiss brown mushrooms. We always buy local first but when we can’t find something we either do without or source it from wholesale organic suppliers at Melbourne Markets. Everything we sell is organic, and we sell everything from fresh vegetables, fruit, herbs and famous CERES eggs, to breads from four different organic bakeries, preserves and a wide range of grocery items. We are also pioneering the Urban Orchard Project, where excess fruit from local backyard trees is traded, donated or given away one Saturday a month at the Market.

The CERES Market provides local people with an affordable, ethical and friendly way of doing business, both buying and selling, within the village atmosphere of CERES.
