| Tucked away on the banks of the Merri creek in Brunswick is the CERES Permaculture and Bushfood Nursery. Situated within the 10ha site of the CERES Community Environment Park, the nursery is a non-profit concern with a clear environmental message. Nurseries are commonly regarded as "green businesses", but just how green or environmentally friendly is the average nursery? Shelves are often stocked with highly toxic pesticides and herbicides as well as high phosphate fertilisers sometimes manufactured using environmentally unsound practices. So it is refreshing to come across a nursery that is setting a new standard, practicing organics, promoting public awareness and education as well as providing an alternative choice. |

Ceres Nursery boasts a 'no chemical'
policy. Plants are propagated and grown without the use of pesticides
and herbicides. Organic solutions are used whenever necessary and some
of the friendliest chooks you will ever meet wander around the nursery,
eating snails, slugs and other garden pests. Through companion planting
and a host of predatory insects, birds and lizards, the nursery staff
find no need to use chemical controls at all. Customers are offered
an organic solution to all their garden woes and often choose a non
toxic alternative. |
Water conservation is an issue that CERES nursery
has made a very high priority. Sprinkler systems use an enormous amount
of water and can often be ineffective and cause large quantities of
nutrient run off. The plants are all hand watered, maintaining healthy
root systems and equally hardy plants. The nursery has tanks set up
to catch water from roof surface areas and all sink water runs straight
onto the vegie gardens. |

| CERES is an extremely child friendly place and children seem to enjoy themselves in the nursery just as much as the adults. There is an old blue tractor for children to climb upon and a big sandpit complete with seating for parents to sit and relax. |

Lemon Myrtle, Lilly-Pilly and Lemon Scented Tea-Tree |
The nursery carries a vast and unusual array of plants. Specialising in food plants and Aboriginal bushfood plants. These plants all have a medicinal or edible component, be it berries, roots, leaves or tubers. Samples can be plucked from the garden and there is an exciting range of new flavours and textures just waiting to tease your taste buds. CERES aims to preserve these traditional food plants for future generations and help to conserve local knowledge. |
| There are many other plants that you rarely see in mainstream nurseries nowadays. Chilean Guava or Ugni (Myrtus ugni) which makes excellent hedging and is often recommended as an alternative to the common English Box. Plants like Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) Pepino (Solanum muricatum) and Strawberry guava (Psidium littorale var. longipes). The nursery is also a herb grower's delight with many hard to get varieties available just about all year round. The nursery staff are fully committed to the environmental principles of the nursery. They are passionate horticulturists with a penchant for growing your own food. It is refreshing to be given true sound advice from a nursery person who understands your plans and believes in their product. Ceres Nursery has a strong vision for the future and indeed for the horticultural industry as a whole. There are already so many sustainable practices in place; saving seeds, conserving heirloom plant varieties, water conservation and more. The nursery hopes to gain funding to take it to new levels and become a model for the industry. There are plans to implement capillary watering systems, broad water catchment, environment friendly and energy efficient design and much more. Lets hope this ground breaking nursery receives the recognition it justly deserves. |
