The reed bed is the central component of our water recycling system.

It uses natural processes including biological activity, chemical reactions, mechanical filtration and absorption to clean our wastewater. We recycle enough water here to irrigate the whole village green garden and lawn area.

How Our Reed Bed Works

how our reedbed works

Wastewater from our cafe and toilets flows through the reed bed through scoria (small stones) and the reeds' root systems.

The reeds are planted in the scoria, which help provide maximum surface area for micro-organisms to thrive and breakdown detergents, soaps and pathogenic (harmful) bacteria.

By the end of the reed bed, processed water is safe enough to be re-used in the garden.

Our reed bed was designed and constructed by the CERES Green Technology Workshop.
'PMP Poly Membrane and Pipe' provided the liner.
